SIOUX FALLS — Two dogs were rescued by first responders on Wednesday, April 12, after the structure the pets were in caught fire.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, first responders in Minnehaha County were dispatched to the 1200 block of East Old Hickory Street, on the city’s far north end, for a report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a deck fire that had spread to a home. Though the residents were not home at the time, two dogs were discovered inside an attached garage. The pets were rescued from the burning structure and taken to a vet for further evaluation.

Firefighters from multiple agencies were eventually able to contain and extinguish the fire. One firefighter was treated on scene for heat exposure.

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. The agency was assisted on scene by fire crews from Renner, Sioux Falls, Brandon and Baltic, as well as MedStar Ambulance and Minnehaha County Emergency Management.
