SIOUX FALLS — A preliminary investigation into a fatal Sioux Falls house fire that broke out Monday has not found any signs of foul play, the Sioux Falls Police Department announced Tuesday morning.
At approximately 3:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, fire crews were called to the 500 block of West Ninth Street in central Sioux Falls for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found smoke emerging from the structure. While inside the building, firefighters with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue found one person who was dead.
During Tuesday’s regular news briefing, police spokesman Sam Clemens said that while the fire department continues to work with city detectives on the investigation, there was “nothing suspicious to lead investigators to believe it was” a suspicious fire.
Clemens added that an autopsy has already been conducted on the victim, but that those results are not yet available.
The name of the individual killed in the fire likely won’t be released by the police department, Clemens said, as the department typically doesn’t announce fatalities unless there was a suspicious or criminal nature to the death.
