SIOUX FALLS — Fifteen Sioux Falls school students have been selected to share their ideas about a variety of subjects at the city’s first TEDx youth event.
The program will be Friday, March 24, at the Jefferson High School Auditorium at 7 p.m.
The students will present short talks on such subjects as mental health, staying connected, art, the fear of failure, happiness, safety and the hidden health crisis affecting children.
Speakers have been practicing and receiving coaching weekly since January to develop their ideas and presentations.
The 15 students were selected from 39 applications.

Superintendent Jane Stavem, who meets regularly with high school students, said she saw a need for the district’s young thinkers to have a platform and she came up with the idea for the youth event.
“I am constantly impressed by the passion, knowledge, and desire for further growth displayed by our students,” Stavem said in a statement. “I have the privilege of hearing their ideas, their concerns and their solutions to issues they face when I meet with them.”
She said the community deserves to hear from them, too.
Students who will be speaking are Audrey Akkerman, Isabela Azumatan Aceituno, Masha Doering, Luis Gaspar, Jenisha Gurung, Beneyam Hassen, Alexis Hopp, Zouhera Mahamded, Aayush Mohapatra, Moriah Mulamba, Sunday Rose, Will Schmidt, Carter Van Ruler, Joudy Wahbi and Ida Pickner.
