Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash in northwestern Sioux Falls

Police say the vehicle fled the scene after striking the individual.

SIOUX FALLS — A pedestrian has died from their injuries following a hit-and-run crash in northwestern Sioux Falls.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, March 17, police in Sioux Falls were called to the intersection of North Marion Road and West Bentgrass Street, roughly four blocks north of the intersection with Maple Street, for a report of a pedestrian-vehicle crash.

On arrival, authorities discovered an adult male with life-threatening injuries. The victim was taken by ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital, where he later died.

A preliminary investigation conducted by the Sioux Falls Police Department’s traffic unit indicated that a vehicle was traveling southbound on Marion Road when it struck the pedestrian, who was crossing the road.

After the vehicle struck the pedestrian, it left the scene, police say. Authorities are currently working to locate the driver.

In a news release, police say traffic in the area was rerouted while an investigation took place. Police did not say whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time of the crash.

No arrests have been made in the case as of 2 a.m. Saturday.
