Thieves broke windows to access 16 vehicles in two Sioux Falls parks

Police say 15 of the cars were locked but that didn't stop them from stealing purses and other items at Sertoma and Family parks on Sunday.

SIOUX FALLS — Thieves stole purses and other items from 16 vehicles parked in two city parks on Sunday, May 21.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens said someone broke the windows and stole items at Sertoma and Family parks in Sioux Falls.

All but one of the cars was locked. It’s good that the cars were locked but it’s a reminder not to leave valuables in your vehicle, Clemens said.

“It’s quick, easy for somebody to break a window, reach in and grab something and then they’re on their way,” he said during the regular police briefing Monday.

There are no suspects in the thefts and police don’t have any way to know if they were all committed by the same person or people. The incidents happened during the day.

Clemens encouraged anybody who has information to call CrimeStoppers at 605-367-7007 or 877-367-7007. The service is anonymous and tips can also be submitted online at www.crimestopperssiouxempire.com .

“There were a lot of people who were outside so there’s a good chance that somebody saw something,” he said.
