SIOUX FALLS — Who out there asked Santa for a cold Christmas? Don’t do that again.

Hopefully you were able to get to where you needed to go before the entire state turned into Hoth from “The Empire Strikes Back.”

The good news is that this week will be MUCH warmer. We’re talking high 20s and the low 30s.

Get your shorts and sunscreen ready!

This week’s list is heavy on the new year festivities. No surprises there. We have events for those who like to party, those whose kids rule their every move and those who are looking for something a little different. If there’s nothing on this list that’s of interest, you were probably just going to endlessly scroll through Netflix, anyway. We did the best we could.

Hike in the cold. Yay?

We can think of a few better things to do when it’s cold, but it is the new year, so let’s challenge ourselves, right?

Good Earth State Park at Blood Run east of Sioux Falls is hosting a 1-mile hike to kick off the new year from 2 to 3 p.m. Jan. 1, 2023.

Big Sioux Recreation Area will host a half-mile self-guided hike at 2 p.m. Jan. 1. The trail will have interpretation signs with facts on the trees. The event is part of First Day Hikes, a nationwide initiative on Jan. 1 to get people moving at their local state parks.

A state park license is required for both hikes, and it goes without saying that participants need to dress for the conditions.

But with a projected high in the 20s, it will feel downright balmy compared to the previous two weeks. Let’s gooooooooo!
