SIOUX FALLS — The victims of two separate fatal crashes that took place in Sioux Falls over the weekend have been identified by authorities.

At the Sioux Falls Police Department’s regular briefing on Wednesday, Feb. 15, police spokesman identified the victims as 50-year-old Alfred Demouchette and 40-year-old Byron Hedges Jr., both of Sioux Falls. Both fatal crashes occurred on Saturday, Feb. 11.

In the first crash, emergency crews were called at approximately 10:30 a.m. to the quarries at the intersection of West Madison Street and North Lyon Boulevard for a report of a single-vehicle crash. Upon arrival, first responders found a Dodge Ram pickup that had driven from West Madison Street into the southwest quarry.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue crews extricated Demouchette from the vehicle, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and police say the cause of the crash remains unclear.

Roughly five hours later, at 3:30 p.m., police were called to the intersection of West Eighth Street and North Covell Avenue for a separate report of a vehicle-motorcycle crash. A preliminary investigation determined that the motorcycle, driven by Hedges Jr., had collided with a Mercedes SUV.

Hedges Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene, while an adult female passenger sustained critical injuries and was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment. Neither occupant of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and police gave no update on the female passenger’s condition.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens did not announce any charges against the driver of the Mercedes.

The crashes resulted in the first two traffic fatalities within Sioux Falls city limits this year.
