1 killed, 1 injured in New Year's Eve crash near Canton

CANTON, S.D. — One person was killed and another seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash late on New Year’s Eve Saturday night, Dec. 31, west of Canton.

According to a highway patrol news release, a 2007 Saturn Vue was southbound on South Dakota Highway 115 at about 10:30 p.m. As the Saturn entered the intersection with U.S. Highway 18, it collided with a 2012 Subaru Forester that was eastbound on U.S. Highway 18.

The 40-year-old female driver of the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt, according to the news release.

The 57-year-old male driver of the Saturn, who was not wearing a seatbelt, had to be extricated from the vehicle, according to the release. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to a Sioux Falls hospital.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Saturn, according to the release.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
